At the recent Asian Summit in Singapore the consensus was that in order to make eco-travel more effective all iniatives must start from the top: "Governments, hotels and major tourism operators must take the lead in boosting environmentally friendly tourism, which has yet to make a major impact on the industry" - according to experts at a recent United Nations-backed conference on climate change.
Martin Abbugao, Agence France Presse stated in an The Globe and Mail article, that "The industry has been slow to adopt sustainable environmental practices because it is fragmented and includes small operators preoccupied with earning a living rather than thinking about preserving the environment."
"What small operators and hotelier want to do is earn a living - they cannot think too deep and too wide. It is therefore up to the government and the big players to lead and push it down to the suppliers, the agents, and transport operators."
